International schools in Bermuda

A group of prestigious private schools with long and varied histories meets demand for international education from local elites and expatriate families on the island of Bermuda.  

The 20-square-mile island in the North Atlantic is a British Overseas Territory and a major offshore finance centre. In 2021, it had 63,867 inhabitants and a per capita GDP of $110,870 that was ranked joint highest in the world – along with that of Luxembourg – by the World Bank.

The private English-medium day schools offer the curriculums of the UK, the US or the International Baccalaureate Office. Most are coeducational and fees can be high. The island’s one private school for girls, Bermuda High School, now admits boys in the sixth form. 

There are three IB World Schools: Bermuda High, Warwick Academy and Somersfield Academy, which are all authorised to offer the IB Diploma. Somersfield also offers the Middle Years Programme, while Warwick also delivers the Career-related Programme. 

Education is compulsory from age five to 17 and free at government schools. Bermuda has 38 government schools plus several aided schools that receive public funding. 

Gross enrolment in 2015 was 101 per cent at primary level and 77 per cent at secondary level, while gross tertiary enrolment in 2018 was 19 per cent, according to UNESCO.

Bermuda does not have any universities and school-leavers typically go to university in the US, Canada or the UK. They can also benefit from subsidised places at the University of the West Indies, to which Bermuda contributes funding.
