International schools in Romania

Romania has a thriving international school sector centred on the capital Bucharest that offers opportunities to follow the curriculums of Britain, Germany, France, the US, Japan, Lebanon and the International Baccalaureate Office. 

With a handful of schools scattered across other cities including Cluj, Timisoara and Iasi, the sector also encompasses Christian foundations and bilingual schools that teach the Romanian curriculum alongside international programmes. Coeducational day schooling is the norm. 

There are 10 IB World Schools. A total of nine schools are authorised to teach the IB Diploma, while three follow all three IB programmes.  

The French-medium Lycée Francais Anna de Noailles, which follows the national curriculum of France, celebrated its centenary in 2020, while the new French International School of Bucharest, which offers trilingual instruction towards the French baccalaureate international option, opened its doors in September 2019.

The highly selective International Computer High School of Bucharest, which teaches STEM subjects in English and offers the Romanian baccalaureate, is a regular winner of maths and computing Olympiads.  Accrediting bodies active in Romania include the Council of British International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.  

Education is compulsory for 11 years from age six to 16 and state schools are free. Five years of primary education are followed by four years at gymnasium. A further four years at high school leads to the Romanian baccalaureate.  

In the seven years from 2012, the number of children not in school soared by more than 300 per cent to 135,003. In 2019, net enrolment was 83 per cent at primary level and 81 per cent at secondary level. Gross tertiary enrolment was 58 per cent for women and 45 per cent among men.
