International schools in Slovakia

Are you looking for an international school in Slovakia? You can find a list of selected schools at the bottom of this page. Use the search filters to select only girls' or boys' schools, prep schools, senior schools or sixth forms; or you can search for schools that offer a particular curriculum.

Schools offering programmes leading to British A-levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma and American high school diplomas predominate, but there are also French and German schools and a Montessori foundation.

Most international schools offer coeducational day schooling from kindergarten through to senior secondary level. A notable exception is LEAF Academy, a four-year boarding high school that draws students from across central Europe [highlighted in JC listings].

Slovakia has nine IB World Schools, of which four teach in English and five offer instruction in English, Slovak and a third language. A total of seven schools are authorised to teach the IB Diploma, including three state schools. Two of the latter – Spojená Å¡kola Novohradská and Spojená Å¡kola, Pankúchova – also deliver the IB Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme.

The international education groups Nord Anglia Education, QSI and JK Education operate schools in Slovakia, while accrediting bodies active in the country include the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of British International Schools.

Slovakia has a strong educational tradition and a very high human development rating of 0.848. Education is compulsory for 10 years from age six and free at public institutions including universities. The vast majority of state schools teach in Slovak.

Students usually attend primary school for nine years, followed by four years of high school. The latter include highly selective gymnaziums; general education schools; and secondary vocational schools. There are also some eight-year gymnaziums, which take pupils at age 11.

In 2020, net enrolment rates at primary, secondary and tertiary levels were 85 per cent, 84 per cent and 47.6 per cent respectively, with tertiary enrolment higher for women at 57.2 per cent. Slovakia has 20 universities and colleges and many school-leavers study abroad.
