Between the 8th and 10th April 2019, The British International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam played host to seven inspectors from Penta International, a leading inspection organisation that is authorised by the British Government to inspect British Schools Overseas.

The purpose of the inspection was to provide information to students, parents, teachers, senior managers and the school’s ownership on the overall effectiveness of the school, the standard of education it provides, and the extent to which it meets the standards of the UK’s Department of Education.

Penta International’s work is rigorously quality assured by the UK’s inspection body the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). They are one of the few companies in the educational world that offers the security of being accredited for ISO 9001:2000, the international kitemark for quality management systems. As a result, British International School, HCMC, participate in a voluntary inspection with them every three years to assure the quality of their own work.

During the inspection visit this April, more than 130 full-or part-lessons were observed by inspectors. School documentation and policies were analysed and data reviewed. Students’ work was scrutinised, and discussions were held with the senior staff, the leadership team, a range of teachers, parents and groups of students. Three school days were monitored.

In the report that followed, The British International School, Ho Chi Minh City (BIS HCMC) met or exceeded all the standards for British Schools Overseas. Furthermore, the school was rated as an “outstanding school in all categories”, an accolade that very few schools around the world have been able to achieve.

The inspection focused on eight categories, which included a close look at the school’s curriculum, their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils, and facilities.

In amongst the list of school strengths were:

  • The attitude to learning from the students and the high-quality learning led to excellent attainment;
  • The rapport between teachers and students, and amongst the students themselves is exemplary, which ensures a happy and productive learning environment;
  • The community outreach programme is exemplary, and has a significant impact on the personal development of the students.
